Our History

Back in 1965 Sheldon (Kappy) Kaplow put up a shingle and started a CPA firm. Back then everything was done on paper, from handwritten tax returns to bookkeeping in manual ledgers and on accounting paper. It was him alone, his wife Norma was home raising their 3 small children. Kappy’s son Michael decided that being a CPA like his father was what he wanted to do. He graduated from Bentley College (now Bentley University) in 1985, worked at a big Boston firm for 3 years to get the experience needed to become a CPA and in 1988 he joined his father in the practice. His mother Norma, also an accountant was already helping out Kappy by then with bookkeeping and reviewing tax returns. So now it was a real family business.

Over the years, Michael worked hard to grow the practice and modernize it by moving everything off of paper to computer programs, despite the grumblings of his father. The family business grew again in 2000 when Heidi, Michael’s wife, joined the firm. Their boys were just 4 and 8 at the time and working for the family business allowed for more flexibility than her full- time job in Boston. Her role started small and has evolved to be a little of everything and the glue that holds the firm together.

Under Michael’s direction, the firm continued to grow and expand. It is no longer just a family employed business, it has expanded to include additional permanent and seasonal staff, even adding another generation with Michael and Heidi’s son Aaron. The practice is unique, it takes pride in providing personal, individualized service to all of its clients. Current clients will agree that when they call the office and talk to Heidi, she genuinely knows who they are and their tax and/or business situation. The practice still has the small family feel even though it has expanded its services and grown into a strong mid-size accounting firm, servicing hundreds of individual and business clients.

Kappy and Norma Kaplow are no longer with us, but Michael and Heidi continue to follow their example of a family firm that provides their clients with the professional services they need, with an added personal touch.
